Dutch Shepherd or Malinois: telling them apart

They overlap in work and sometimes in looks. The history, the coat rules and the supply are where they part ways.

Why the coat rules exist

In 1914 the Dutch breed standard was limited to brindle to separate the breed from the German Shepherd and Belgian shepherds, which looked alike. Wikipedia says it is distinguished mainly by head details in the standard.

Temperament in the sources

The UKC describes the Dutch Shepherd as alert, devoted, obedient and eager to please, possibly somewhat reserved and in need of socialization. Wikipedia describes the Malinois as intelligent, alert and sensitive with a strong guarding instinct, and as especially active. These are descriptions of the breed, and individual dogs vary.

How to choose

  • Choose the Malinois route if you value a larger pool of dogs and professionals who know the breed.
  • Choose the Dutch Shepherd route if you accept a smaller pool, a longer search and the brindle coat.
  • Either way, verify records and watch the dog in ordinary situations.
