Rarity
How rare is the Dutch Shepherd, really?
Rare is a word sellers like. These are the figures behind it and what they should change about your search.
The numbers on record
- Wikipedia reports 854 Dutch Shepherds listed in the AKC Foundation Stock Service in March 2024, 774 of them with three generations recorded.
- It also reports 2,198 permanently registered dogs in the Dutch Shepherd Dog Club of America archive with the UKC, of which 1,328 were active (under 12 years old) on 1 June 2023.
These are two different registries and the counts are not additive. Neither describes how many dogs are for sale, only how many exist on paper.
How the breed got here
By around 1900 sheep flocks had largely disappeared from the Netherlands. World War II then halted breeding, and many dogs starved or were taken away. After the war breeders turned to dogs of unknown origin and, briefly, a Malinois, whose line ended after a few generations. The breed club later allowed a Belgian Laekenois into the rough-haired variety in 1959.
Recognition in the United States
The AKC page for its Miscellaneous Class says breeds there are still enrolled in the Foundation Stock Service until the AKC Board accepts them for regular status. Check that page for the current position, because status can change. The UKC has registered the breed since 1995.
What scarcity should change
- Expect to widen your search area and wait.
- Be suspicious of urgency. A genuinely scarce dog does not need a same-day deposit.
- Check registration directly with the registry named on the paperwork.
- Do not accept the word "Dutch" for a brindle dog of unknown parentage.
Sources of working dogs are discussed in working lines.
Quick answers
Does rare mean valuable?
Not by itself. Quality, health records and temperament matter more than scarcity.
Is the breed fully recognized by AKC?
The AKC Miscellaneous Class page describes breeds there as enrolled in its Foundation Stock Service. Confirm the current status with AKC.
